GTA 6 is Rockstar’s open-world crime game, following Jason and Lucia through Leonida’s criminal underworld. Robbery is central to this wiki, and this time it is not just scripted — Rob Nelson demonstrated an entire store robbery to Famitsu, and the route is specific enough to plan around.

The core conclusion: a robbery succeeds or fails on how you get in, not on how many guns you bring. Approach from the back, pick the lock, kill the cameras, disable the alarm, and you can take the register cash without leaving a trace. Walk in the front with a gun and a helpful bystander calls the police, who are already waiting when you come out.

The clean route in five steps

  1. Approach from the back. Do not use the front door. If a passer-by sees you drawing a weapon outside, the report happens almost immediately.
  2. Pick the lock, do not kick the door. The demo uses a snap gun, a dedicated lockpick tool that must be unlocked first. Kicking the door in triggers the alarm.
  3. Deal with the eyes first. Destroy the security cameras so nobody can see you, then disable the security system so the alarm will not sound.
  4. Take the money and go. Quietly empty the register, then leave the way you came. Nobody knows anything happened.
  5. Do not go back. No action happens here, but it decides whether you leave clean or leave a record.

What happens if you go in loud

The same system supports brute force, with predictable costs:

  • Someone outside sees you preparing to storm in with a gun and calls the police.
  • You still get the money, but police may already be outside when you leave.
  • The violence level feeds your criminal profile, which changes how the world treats you later.

There is a middle route too: kick the back door, grab what you can and run. Police get called, but you keep an escape window. The difference between the three approaches is not the payout, it is how much evidence you leave.

Robberies are more than corner stores

Rob Nelson says robbery targets run from small stores to jewellery shops, gang hideouts, banks and armoured vans. Some belong to the main story, some are open-world events, and some story progress is gated behind cash goals, so you have to earn before you can continue. Selling stolen cars is the other main earner — see the car theft system.

Loot also splits into clean and dirty money. Stolen cash cannot be spent directly; it has to be taken to a fence, and each fence specialises in cars, drugs, jewellery or other goods and is unlocked through exploration or story progress. That economy is what turns robbery from a one-off mission into a repeatable income loop.

The criminal profile

Replacing RDR2’s honour system is the criminal profile. It does not judge whether you are good or bad, it judges what kind of criminal you are. Four states are known — Professional, Aggressive, Violent and Psycho — and Jason and Lucia are tracked separately.

  • Unnecessary killings and public crimes push the profile down.
  • Clean jobs with no casualties or police involvement push it up.
  • Extreme behaviour eventually shatters the icon and locks it for the rest of the playthrough.
  • Notifications can be disabled, and players who want chaos can still play that way.

It is the mirror of the wanted and heat system: the profile records what you did, while heat records what police know.

FAQ

Can you stealth a robbery without a snap gun?

The clean route depends on a snap gun. Without one you can still use the back door, but kicking it triggers the alarm, so the run stops being clean.

Is robbing a store the same as robbing a bank?

No. Small stores are open-world robbery events, while large targets involve more complex tools and mission structure. Blowing a safe is faster but can damage the loot; taking your time pays more but gives police longer to respond.

Does the criminal profile affect the ending?

Rockstar has only said it affects how missions play out in the world. Whether it changes the ending is not confirmed.
